First formant difference for /i/ and /u/:
نویسنده
چکیده
The value of the first formant of high back and high front vowels (/u/ and /i/) has been determined for near minimal pairs in a 30-language sample. It is found that for 29 out of 30 languages the average of the first formant is higher for high back vowels than for high front vowels, and that for 26 out of 28 languages the majority of minimal pairs has a high back vowel with higher first formant than that of the high front vowel. A trend towards smaller differences was found in women, but this is not significant in the present data set. Two factors may explain this observation. Firstly, the human vocal tract can only vary the position of gradual (and not abrupt) transitions of cross-sectional area. Secondly, there is a narrow tube just above the glottis (the epilarynx tube). Both factors cause the first formant of high back vowels to be raised, but neither is sufficiently important to explain the observed differences on its own.

Study and Comparison of Formant Characteristics of Persian Vowels in 4-7-year-old Children Using Cochlear Implants and Those Using Hearing Aids
Background and Objective: One of the most important physical properties of vowels is their formant structure. One of the most obvious speech errors in hearing-impaired children is vowel errors. The present study aimed to determine and compare the formant structure of Persian vowels in deaf and cochlear implant children in the age range of 4-7 years. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-anal...
متن کاملThe Study of Vowel Space and Formant Structure in Mazani Language
Objective: One of the parameters showing the correct phonetic and phonological development is the correct and clear articulation of vowels is achieved by changing the shape of vocal cords through altering the height and position of the tongue and the movement of the lips and jaw. The tongue’s height and position are the basis of the production and difference of vowels. In other words, the raw s...
متن کاملFirst formant difference for /i/ and /u/: A cross-linguistic study and an explanation
When the acoustic space that can be reached by a realistic articulatory model (Mermelstein, 1973) is explored systematically, an interesting asymmetry between front and back vowels is found (de Boer, 2009). The first formant of the highest possible back vowel [u] is lower than the first formant of the highest possible front vowel [i]. In order to test this observation in real languages, the val...
متن کاملDevelopmental change of vowel production in Cantonese children
The paper investigates the developmental change in formant frequencies (F1F2) of the vowels [i u ɛ ɔ a] in Cantonese male and female children of the ages ranging from 4 to 12. Results show that (i) a decrease in formant frequencies and vowel loop area is a function of age and the change is a gradual process; (ii) the developmental change with age is non-uniform across vowel types and formants, ...
متن کاملMismatch negativity at Fz in response to within-category changes of the vowel /i/
The amplitude of the mismatch negativity response for acoustic within-category deviations in speech stimuli was investigated by presenting participants with different exemplars of the vowel /i/ in an odd-ball paradigm. The deviants differed from the standard either in terms of fundamental frequency, the first formant, or the second formant. Changes in fundamental frequency are generally more sa...
